Coaching

Quality
coaching is crucial if people are to be introduced to sport
properly and are to maximise their full potential.
The Sports Council for Northern Ireland is responsible for
establishing the strategic direction for coaching in Northern
Ireland. In doing so, the Council works closely with Coaching
NI, SportscoachUK and the
National Coaching and Training
Centre in Limerick, to ensure that coaching development in
Northern Ireland meets the needs of sports regardless of whether
they are organised on a UK or all Ireland basis.

The
Council is currently considering the implementation of the UK
Vision for Coaching document and the implications for
Northern Ireland of the Coaching Taskforce report which was
published in July 2002.
The
main areas of the Sports Councils work are focused on:
-
ensuring
effective coaching development planning by organisations such
as district councils, governing bodies of sport etc;
-
ensuring
that the right structures are in place to develop coaching in
Northern Ireland;
-
ensuring
that organisations work in partnership with each other;
-
ensuring
good practice in the identification, recruitment and
management of coaches;
-
ensuring
opportunities are available at local and regional levels for
the education, training and continuous professional
development of coaches;
-
encouraging
organisations to reward and recognise the role played by of
coaches.
