Sports Development

The Community sport and Performance sport sections of the Sports Council's Sports Development Unit share the objective of creating sporting opportunities for all those who want to get involved in sport and at a level of their choosing.

Both sections are especially interested in affording those people who previously had no or little opportunity to experience sport in a high quality environment the chance to do so.

For example it is well known that those who are in the lower socio-economic groups are less likely to participate in sport and in sports clubs.  Community sport aims to increase the likelihood of participation and sports club membership in areas of social disadvantage.  Similarly performance sport aims to increase the likelihood of people living in disadvantaged areas who want to reach levels of public acclaimed excellence.

The pages on Community sport and Performance sport contained on this web site provide details of the development programmes which the Sports Development unit is using in realising these objectives.
