FIRST YOUTH SPORT FUNDING PACKAGE GOES TO ST JOHN’S HIGH SCHOOL IN DROMORE

Tuesday 5 December saw the launch of the New Opportunities Funding to St John’s High School in Dromore, Co Tyrone.

The school received a cheque for £58,000 over a three year period to assist them in the development of their after school sports programme and is funded by NOF’s out of school hours learning. The co-ordinator, Brian McCarron will be released on tow days a week to develop and expand his existing links with 12 feeder primary schools and this will enable him to deliver up to 40 courses throughout the year, in a range of sites including primary sites, local community centres and at St John’s itself. In addition Brian will provide teacher programmes through TOP’s and coach education programmes for teachers linked to the ongoing programmes developed by the Western Education and Library Board. In order to access new coaches and to create more existing links he will be organising a range of Sport Parent evenings to make parents aware of some of the issues around sport and young people, but also to see if any of those parents could become the leaders and coaches of the future. The final part of the package is to develop links with local clubs and to ensure that up to eight of these clubs run regular evening sessions to sustain the work being done in school time with what goes on in the community. This is a very strong Gaelic Football area and Brian’s challenge is to get other clubs in the area offering opportunities for young people to develop the skills that they have been working on during their time in school. The Youth sport programme in Dromore will be used as a model of good practice for others to follow throughout Northern Ireland, with funding coming from NOF, the Western Education and Library Board and supported by the Sports Council for NI.
