Better coaching leads to better sport. In this section we look at the work of one of the principal partners in developing coaching standards - the N.I.I.C. The Institute provides support for coaches working at all levels. Community and club coaches can access a comprehensive workshop programme, high performance coaches are supported through a individualised personal development programme.

Coach of the Year Awards 2001
Following the success of last year’s awards, the Coach of the Year Programme has been expanded to ensure that more coaches, from a broader range of sports, receive reward. Anyone with an interest in sport and sports coaching may nominate a coach by completing the official nomination form.

Background

Founded in 1980, the NIIC is the leading organisation for the development and education of coaches in Northern Ireland. In provides a wide range of quality education programmes for all levels of coaches.

  • During the last 3 years the NIIC has run 130 courses.
  • 500 people have gained the NIIC Fitness Instructor Award.
  • The Institute is staffed by a full time Executive Officer and a part-time Programme Director.

Membership Details

The Institute offers membership in three categories: full, associate and corporate. Full membership, currently standing at 600, costs £15. Benefits of full membership include: £5,000,000 public liability insurance, copies of NCF coaching magazines and the NIIC Newsletter, reduced fees at coach education courses and the use of a resource library.

Current Programme

The Institute provides a comprehensive programme of coach education and other training and events:
  • NCF Introductory and Key Courses - The NIIC organises around 50 courses per year to some 600 coaches at venues throughout N.I.
  • Exercise & Fitness (Gymnasium) Award/Free Weight and Circuit Training Award. These Awards are offered 4/5 times per year. The Exercise and Fitness Award takes 6 intensive days to complete followed by a 1 day assessment.
  • Fitness Testing (Field) Seminars.
  • Support Programme For Elite Coaches.
  • Annual Conference.
  • Coach of the Year Awards
  • Coaching Workshops

Future Developments

The NIIC plans to expand to give it a regional capacity to deliver general training and coach education. In order to achieve this the Institute plans to appoint additional staff. Membership benefits will continue to be upgraded, services are currently being developed in association with the NCF Leeds. A new and exciting package of NCF coach education programmes have been developed and are now on offer.
