Sports Council Merit Awards  - September 2005 Winners

Malachy McAleer and Sean Curneen

Malachy (pictured) and Sean are joint winners of the Sports Council/ Sunday Life Merit Award
in September 2005.

Janet Parkinson has nominated both Malachy and Sean for their time and commitment to the development to sport in Omagh over the last 15 years.

Malachy and Sean are both founder members of Youth Sport Omagh and currently hold the positions of Chairman and Secretary at the organisation respectively.

In 1992, Malachy and Sean met to discuss discuss and improve sports facilities in Omagh for young people. After years of hard work they got other local sports facilitators on board and lobbied council and they secured some land to develop.
To help facilitate the cost of this, Malachy and Sean set up a non-profit company and after years of meetings, project and finances management, they raised enough money to build Youth Sport Omagh.

Malachy and Sean showed great resilience and managed a lot of work themselves throughout this project, while carrying on their own jobs and their coaching responsibilities.

Sport in Omagh owes these two men a great deal.
