Launch of NI Youth Games 2008
The ninth Youth Games will be taking place this summer at a number of venues across Northern Ireland. Sport Northern Ireland are once again funding the event, which will involve over 800 young people aged between 12 and 16 competing in a variety of sports.
Speaking on the 2008 Games Eamonn McCartan, Chief Executive of Sport Northern Ireland commented: “We are delighted to be able to support the Youth Games once again. It clearly fits in with our objectives, as it’s all about participation and striving for excellence and there is a very important cross-community element as well”.

The competitors from hockey, netball, volleyball, basketball, cricket, badminton and table tennis are the best in their age group and are nominated by schools and clubs to participate. Each participant receives a minimum of twenty hours quality coaching through the Regional Development Squads to represents their Education & Library Board or County in the Games.
For the potential young sporting stars of the future, the Games offers an opportunity to experience the adrenalin and buzz of taking part in a tournament of this size. Over the years Youth Games competitors have gone on to compete at County, Provincial and International Level.
