Fun filled end of term for pupils as Ulster and Ireland rugby player, Paddy Wallace visits

Pupils in Aghavilly Primary School, County Armagh and Dungannon Primary School, County Tyrone had an extra fun filled end of term when they
received a visit from Ulster and Ireland rugby player, Paddy Wallace. Paddy was visiting the schools to congratulate them on their winning Activ8 classroom displays they had submitted as part of Sport Northern Ireland’s Activ8 programme.

Paddy’s first stop was at Aghavilly Primary where the pupils demonstrated their sporting skills to Paddy by taking part in some sports drills. Then it was Paddy’s turn as the pupils tested out his reflexes by putting him in goals for a penalty shoot out.

Aghavilly Primary took part in Activ8 by participating in over 20 different sports activities and recording which activities proved most popular with the pupils. Pupils also looked at how important it is to eat well by designing healthy eating posters and serving fruit skewers as part of a healthy break.

Ann McCartney, Principal of Aghavilly Primary spoke of the pupils delight at meeting Paddy, “It was great to have Paddy Wallace visit our school for our participation in Activ8. Both the children and staff were really excited to meet him. The pupils had a great time doing sports with Paddy and he was great with them, being extremely patient signing autographs and taking time out to speak with them all”.

On Friday afternoon, Paddy visited another wining Activ8 school, Dungannon Primary.

As part of Activ8 the children at Dungannon Primary designed and held their own PE lesson for the P6 class.  They selected the most popular lesson and made a model of the activities using junk materials, fabric and wood.  They also created an exercise family tree by bringing in photographs of their families taking part in the Activ8 challenge.  This was used to show everyone in the school the different ways in which you can become more active.

After finding out all about the schools participation in Activ8 it was out to the playground once again for Paddy to demonstrate his sporting skills and see the pupils in action.  Paddy joined in the schools football tournament, put the pupils through some rugby drills, chatted to the pupils and signed autographs.

The Principal of Dungannon Primary, Neil Downing had to this say of Paddy’s visit, “We were thrilled to have Paddy Wallace visiting the school and the children really enjoyed demonstrating their sporting skills to Paddy.  As a school, we really enjoyed taking part in Activ8, it is a very beneficial scheme, helping children to learn about having a healthy lifestyle in a fun and
enjoyable way.
